Hilton Head Island

Excited to be heading to HHI for a visit with Ken’s parents, Jim and Mary Anne. We left Brunswick in the afternoon, headed down the Brunswick River to anchored off Jekyll Island for the night. This shortened our sail to HHI by a few hours the next day, allowing for a one-day passage to HHI.

Sailing into HHI, just off Dolphin’s Head Point was moving. We sailed past Jim and Mary Anne’s house of 25 years and into Skull Creek Marina where we had dined over the years. Entering a town from the water is so very different from coming from the highway or over the bridge from the mainland. Similar to standing onshore looking out to sea and wondering what is out there, we set anchor and look to shore with anticipation of what we’ll find when we go explore.

HHI has wonderful roots for the Baehr family. Ken’s parents retired here in 1988. They found a terrific accountant, Mitchell Wade who they used for 30 years. When our son Andrew moved to NYC, he started dating a lovely young lady named Sarah, from HHI. Mitchell, hearing that Andrew Baehr was from LF asked Sarah if he was related to Jim and Mary Anne Baehr. Such a small world. Sarah grew up a matter of blocks from Jim and Mary Anne. Both kids played on the above beach and adjoining playground. They were married in Bluffton SC a few years after meeting. What a joy for the whole family.

Family and Friends

Dataw Island

Wanting to explore more of The Low Country we headed up the Morgan River to Dataw Island to visit Lake Forest friends. What a gem this island is, surrounded by beautiful marshes and estuaries. It was so peaceful and quiet. We anchored in Jenkins Creek off Dataw Island for a week waiting for a new part for the generator. It was a perfect place to wait.

It was perfect because our LF friends, the Glennon’s and the Figliulos’s lived in Dataw and Beaufort. Such fun to visit and explore their beautiful retirement location.

Mechanical Troubles

While anchored off Dataw our alternator to the generator locked up. While on anchor we run the generator a few hours daily to recharge our batteries. Our lights, pumps, refrigerator and freezer run on battery power. Ken was able to diagnose the problem, order the part, replace it and just like that we were up and running! Thank you John and Kathy for being our UPS drop off center!
