Block Island, RI

Anchor aweigh. 145 NM. 25 hours.

All too soon our Sandy Hook rendezvous was over, and we fixed our sights east, to Block Island where Andrew, Sarah and our new bundle of joy, Augie were joining us for the weekend.

Gifted with a perfect overnight weather window we confirmed our charted course, made a final Windy weather check for the 21-hour sail, pulled anchor at 10 am to insure a daylight arrival the next morning. Anchor Aweigh!

Sunrise Serenity

Montauk Lighthouse glistens from the early sunrise. A savored time for sailors.

Montauk Lighthouse … the tip of Long Island.

Forbidding Congestion

Great Salt Pond is a well protect deep water pond, with limited area to anchor and few available mooring balls. Winds were building as we dropped anchor. Due to depth and wind, we quickly realized we were not able to drop enough rode to adequately secure Bistari for the heavy forecasted winds. Fortunately, we managed to get a private mooring ball for one night. Early the next morning, in search for a place to securely anchor, Ken took a the dingy and scoped out a location with enough room to drop plenty of rode to hold tight in heavier winds. After moving Bistari to anchor we stayed aboard for a few hours, to make sure we were holding tight and swinging safely. Then it was off for a walk to adorable New Shoreham.

Nighttime Calamity

And just like that, at 3am the winds came steaming through like a highspeed train. Ken turned up the radio, turned on the engine and waited. The drama heightened when a neighboring boat hailed the coast guard “Pan Pan Pan, a boat is blowing through the anchorage, crashing into other boats.” We learned the next morning, super yacht Sea Axis broke loose from it’s anchor and crashed through the mooring field. We were perplexed why the captain of the ship did not full power out of the field when Sea Axis broke loose. Didn’t he have his engine on and standing by while the blow came through?

the Best! Our VIP’s Arrive.
