Sailing into NYC
Sept 13, 2022
Urbanna, VA to New York City Passage
We left Urbanna early Tuesday morning, after confirming the weather window with WRI. Projected wind and wave direction from the northwest was not ideal, but we were anxious to get started. We motored or motor sailed the entire 313 nautical miles. It was a long three-day passage.

Arrived at Liberty Marina, Jersey City after three days at sea. We enjoyed a few days with Andrew and Sarah in Jersey City, then moved over to One 15 Brooklyn Marina, Brooklyn for a night before travelling up the East River from Brooklyn through Hells Gate Bridge to City Island and long Island Sound. What a real treat to visit this great city from the water!
9/11 Memorial
We found the 9/11 Memorial deeply moving. Sounds of roaring waterfall, names etched in granite perimeter walls and the center hole of escaping water was profound. Earlier that day seeing water taxis and power boats scurry up and down the river reminded us of the flotilla of ferries, yachts and tugboats who evacuated 500,000 people away from ground zero. Across the street we visited St. Paul’s Chapel where George Washington went to pray after being sworn in as our nation’s first President. Built in 1766 the Chapel was remarkable unscathed on 9/11. On the 2002 anniversary of 9/11 the mayor of London and the Archbishop of Canterbury presented the Bell of Hope to the people of NY. The bell is rung each anniversary to symbolize triumph over tragedy. Later we visited Little Italy and stumbled on their Feast of San Gennaro. Quite an event that lasts 10 days!
